Configuring Your Settings in FileZilla

FileZilla includes a wide range of settings that allow you to customize how the application connects to servers, transfers files, and displays information.

Adjusting these settings can improve reliability, speed, and usability when working with FTP or SFTP connections.

Open the FileZilla settings
  1. Open FileZilla.
  2. Click Edit in the top menu.
  3. Select Settings.
Connection settings

Under Connection, you can configure how FileZilla handles failed connections:

  • Set the number of connection retries
  • Adjust the delay between retry attempts
FTP settings

Under FTP, you can control how FileZilla connects to servers:

  • Select Active or Passive transfer mode (Passive is recommended for most users)
  • Configure FTP proxy settings if required
Transfer settings

Under Transfers, you can fine-tune file transfer behavior:

  • Set the maximum number of simultaneous transfers
  • Limit concurrent uploads and downloads
  • Enable or disable speed limits
File types and overwrite behavior
  • Set the default transfer type to Auto (recommended)
  • Define what happens if a file already exists during upload or download
Interface and language options
  • Choose your preferred theme and layout
  • Set log position and date or time format
  • Select your default language
Editing and updates
  • Choose a default file editor
  • Set how often FileZilla checks for updates
Logging and debugging

Advanced users can enable logging or adjust debug levels to troubleshoot connection issues.

Tip: For most users, the default FileZilla settings are sufficient. Only change advanced options if you understand their impact.
