How to Change File and Folder Permissions Using FileZilla

FileZilla allows you to change file and folder permissions on a remote server. Permissions control whether files can be read, written to, or executed.

Important: Incorrect permissions can cause websites to stop working or create security risks. Only change permissions if you know what is required.
Before you begin

Ensure FileZilla is installed, running, and connected to your remote server.

Understanding permissions

Permissions are usually shown as a numeric value, such as 644 or 755:

  • Read (4): Allows viewing the file contents
  • Write (2): Allows modifying the file
  • Execute (1): Allows running the file or accessing a directory
Change file permissions
  1. In the remote server pane (right side), locate the file.
  2. Right-click the file and select File permissions.
  3. Adjust the read, write, and execute checkboxes, or enter the numeric value.
  4. Click OK to apply the changes.

The updated permissions will appear immediately.

Change folder permissions
  1. Right-click the folder you want to modify.
  2. Select File permissions.
  3. Set the appropriate permissions (commonly 755).
  4. Click OK.
Common permission values:
Files: 644
Folders: 755
Troubleshooting

If permission changes fail, your FTP user may not have sufficient privileges. In that case, contact support for assistance.
