How To Write A New Post In WordPress

How to Write a New Post in WordPress

Posts are the main content type used for blog entries, news updates, announcements, and articles in WordPress. This guide explains how to create a new post using the modern Block Editor (Gutenberg).

1. Open the WordPress Post Editor

  1. Log in to your WordPress Admin Dashboard.
  2. Click Posts on the left-hand menu.
  3. Select Add New.

You will now see the WordPress Block Editor.

2. Enter Your Post Title

At the top of the editor, enter the title of your post. This will appear as the main heading on your blog page and also becomes part of the URL.

3. Write Your Post Content

Use the Block Editor to build your post by inserting blocks such as:

  • Paragraphs
  • Headings
  • Images & Galleries
  • Lists
  • Quotes
  • Buttons
  • Videos or Embeds

To add a block, click the + icon or press / and type the block name.

4. Assign Categories and Tags (Optional)

In the right-hand sidebar, you can classify your post:

  • Categories – used to group similar types of content
  • Tags – for more detailed or specific topics

Organising posts correctly helps with SEO and website structure.

5. Set a Featured Image (Optional)

Many themes use a Featured Image at the top of posts or in blog listings.

  1. In the sidebar, click Featured Image.
  2. Upload or choose an image from the Media Library.

6. Control Post Visibility & Publishing Options

Before publishing, you can adjust:

  • Visibility – Public, Private, or Password-Protected
  • Publish Immediately – or schedule a future date & time
  • URL Slug – customise the link

You can also save the post as a Draft or preview it first.

7. Publish Your Post

When you’re ready for your post to go live, click:

Publish

Your new post is now visible on your website.

8. Managing Your Posts

To view or manage all posts, go to:

  • Posts → All Posts

From here you can:

  • Edit a post
  • Quick Edit the title, slug, categories, or date
  • Trash a post
  • View the post on the live site

Posts placed in the Trash can be restored or permanently deleted.
