How To Manage Plugins In WordPress

How to Manage Plugins in WordPress

Plugins extend the functionality of WordPress by adding new features such as contact forms, security enhancements, SEO tools, page builders, eCommerce support, and much more. This guide explains how to install, activate, update, deactivate, and delete plugins safely.

1. Accessing the Plugins Page

  1. Log in to your WordPress Admin Dashboard.
  2. In the left-hand menu, click Plugins.
  3. Select Installed Plugins.

This page displays all plugins currently installed on your website.

  • Active – plugins currently running
  • Inactive – plugins installed but not active
  • Update Available – plugins needing an update

2. Activating or Deactivating Plugins

You can control whether a plugin is running:

  • Activate – turns on the plugin
  • Deactivate – turns off the plugin but keeps its files

If your website breaks or behaves unusually after installing a plugin, deactivate it to see if the issue clears.

3. Installing New Plugins

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New.
  2. Use the search bar to find plugins by name or feature.
  3. Click Install Now.
  4. Click Activate once the installation completes.

You can also upload a plugin .zip file using the Upload Plugin button at the top of the page.

4. Updating Plugins

Keeping plugins updated is important for security and compatibility. Outdated plugins are one of the most common causes of hacked WordPress websites.

  1. Go to Plugins.
  2. Any plugin with an update will show an update message.
  3. Click Update Now.

You can also update all plugins at once via Dashboard → Updates.

5. Deleting Plugins

To permanently remove a plugin:

  1. Deactivate the plugin.
  2. Click Delete.

Deleting unused plugins is recommended for security, performance, and cleanliness of your WordPress installation.

6. Editing Plugins (Advanced Users Only)

WordPress includes a Plugin Editor that allows you to modify plugin code. Editing plugin files from the dashboard is not recommended unless you are an experienced developer.

Instead, use:

  • A child theme
  • Custom plugin overrides
  • A staging site for testing changes

Incorrect edits can break your website or cause security vulnerabilities.

7. Troubleshooting Plugin Issues

  • If your website goes blank (White Screen of Death), rename the /wp-content/plugins/ folder via FTP or File Manager to disable all plugins.
  • Ensure plugins are compatible with your PHP version.
  • Conflicts often occur when running multiple plugins that perform similar functions.
