Updated Requirements for Transferring a Domain Name

Transferring a domain between registrars is governed by ICANN’s Transfer Policy. The process has been streamlined in recent years to improve security and reduce fraud. Below are the current requirements and steps you need to know when transferring your domain to or from Fast2Host.

Authorization Requirements

• Transfers require an AuthInfo/EPP code provided by your current registrar.
• A verification email
• Fax or paper authorization is no longer used — transfers are fully digital.
• Contact details are verified via RDAP (which replaced WHOIS).

Domain Status Requirements

• The domain must be at least 60 days old (some registries now allow shorter lock periods).
• The domain must be in ACTIVE or OK status.
• Domains in statuses such as REGISTRAR-LOCK, HOLD, REDEMPTION PERIOD, or PENDING DELETE cannot be transferred.
• If the domain was recently transferred, at least 60 days must pass before another transfer.

TLD-Specific Rules

• .org Domains: Public Interest Registry enforces a 60-day restriction after transfer completion.
• .uk Domains: You must ask your current registrar to change the IPS tag to ENOM. Ownership changes must be handled via Nominet.
• EPP Domains (.com, .net, .info, .biz, .us, .in, .cn, etc.): Require an EPP/AuthInfo code plus email verification.
• 45-Day Rule: If a domain is renewed and then transferred within 45 days, no extra year is added to its expiration date.

Transfer Process Overview

1. Request the transfer at your new registrar.
2. Provide the AuthInfo/EPP code from your current registrar.
3. Approve the verification email sent to the registrant/admin contact.
4. The domain enters Pending Transfer status.
5. The current registrar must release the domain within 5 days unless explicitly denied.
