Apple iWeb and MobileMe have been discontinued for many years. However, if you still have an existing iWeb website or a copy of its published files, you can move the site to modern web hosting by uploading it via FTP.
This guide explains how to migrate an existing iWeb site to a Linux hosting account using FTP.
Step 1 - Purchase a hosting package
Purchase a Linux hosting package. Static iWeb sites work best on Linux hosting and do not require special server configuration.
Step 2 - Locate your iWeb site files
If you still have access to iWeb on your Mac:
- Open iWeb.
- Click the site name in the left sidebar.
- Select File - Publish to Folder.
- iWeb will generate a folder containing
index.htmland supporting files.
If you no longer have iWeb installed but previously published to MobileMe:
- Locate a backup of your MobileMe or iDisk data if available.
- Find the
index.htmlfile and associated folders for your site. - Copy these files to your computer.
Step 3 - Upload the site using FTP
Use an FTP client such as FileZilla, WinSCP, or Cyberduck and connect using the FTP credentials provided in your welcome email.
- Host: yourdomain.com or server hostname
- Username: your FTP or cPanel username
- Password: your FTP password
- Port: 21
- On the server, open the
public_htmldirectory. - Upload all files and folders from your iWeb export.
- Ensure
index.htmlis located directly insidepublic_html.
public_html before uploading to avoid conflicts.Step 4 - Test your website
Open a browser and visit your domain:
https://yourdomain.comYour legacy iWeb website should now be visible.
