Understanding Domain Locks and How to Transfer Your Domain
Domain names often include a registrar lock (also known as a transfer lock) that prevents unauthorised domain transfers. Only the domain owner can disable this lock. This security feature mainly applies to gTLDs such as .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz.
To transfer these domains, you typically need to both unlock the domain and obtain the EPP/Authorization Code.
1. Transferring gTLD Domains (.com, .net, .org, etc.) to Fast2Host
Before you can begin a transfer, you must complete the following steps with your current registrar:
- Unlock the domain (disable the registrar lock).
- Request the EPP Authorization Code (sometimes emailed to the domain owner).
- Ensure the domain’s WHOIS email address is valid and accessible.
Fast2Host cannot unlock or retrieve EPP codes from other registrars, as we have no access to external systems.
Once you have unlocked the domain and obtained the EPP code:
- Log in to your Fast2Host client area: https://www.fast2host.com/login/
- Select Domain Registrations from the left menu.
- Click Transfer a Domain.
- Enter the domain name you wish to transfer.
- Enter the EPP/Authorization Code.
Transfers typically complete within 5 to 7 days, depending on the current registrar.
2. Transferring UK Domains (.co.uk, .uk, .org.uk) to Fast2Host
UK domains do not use EPP codes. Instead, they transfer using the IPS TAG method.
Steps to transfer a UK domain to Fast2Host:
- Contact your current registrar or hosting provider.
- Ask them to change the IPS TAG to: ENOM
- Once the tag is changed, the domain will automatically appear in your Fast2Host account.
No EPP code is required for .uk domain transfers.
3. Transferring Domains Away from Fast2Host
If you want to transfer a domain to another registrar:
- Log in to your client area.
- Select the domain name.
- Click More Options.
- Unlock the domain.
- Click Generate EPP Code (gTLDs only).
For UK domains, simply update the IPS TAG through the same "More Options" menu.
4. Important Notes
- Domains cannot be transferred within the first 60 days of registration or previous transfer.
- Ensure your domain is not expired before starting a transfer.
- WHOIS privacy may need to be temporarily disabled during the transfer process.
