How to use Google Apps and Gmail for your domain email

Sometimes it can be advantageous to use Google Apps to manage your domain email. The current allowance of 50 accounts per domain, and 7GB space per mailbox is impressive.

To start, you need to sign up with Google Apps - the Standard Edition is free - http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html

Follow the instructions for setting up your account. You will then need to modify the MX records for your domain.

For our Windows hosting customers:

Delete any existing email accounts, email forwarders or MRA Addresses in the Helm or Websitepanel Control Panel.

Open the DNS Zone Editor for your domain in the Helm or Websitepanel Control Panel

Remove any existing MX record entries, and any "mail" A record entries.

Add new MX records according to the following:

Record Type Record Name Record Data Preference
MX @ ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 10
MX @ ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 20
MX @ ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 20
MX @ ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 30
MX @ ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 30
MX @ ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 30
MX @ ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 30

For our Linux hosting customers:

Delete any existing email accounts, email forwarders or Mailing lists in Cpanel.

Click on MX Entry

Under Email Routing select and then click on Change

Delete the existing MX record if it exists

Add new MX records according to the following:

Preference Destination
10 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
20 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
20 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
30 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
30 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
30 ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
30

ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.

Fon non-hosting customers (domain management only):

Ensure that your domains nameservers are set to:

dns1.name-services.com

dns2.name-services.com

dns3.name-services.com

dns4.name-services.com

dns5.name-services.com

Click on DNS Management

Enter new DNS Zone records as follows:

Host Name Record Type Address
@ MX (Mail) ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
@ MX (Mail) ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
@ MX (Mail) ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
@ MX (Mail) ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
@ MX (Mail) ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
@ MX (Mail) ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
@ MX (Mail) ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.

Once this is done, contact us to set the record priorities for you, as this is not currently possible via the client area.
