FTP And Navigating Around The Folders Is Extremely Slow

Fixing Slow FTP Navigation

Sometimes, FTPing and navigating around the folders in your hosting account can feel extremely slow. This is usually caused by directory caching within your FTP client software.

What Is Directory Caching?

Directory caching is a feature in many FTP clients that stores folder listings locally to speed up browsing. However, in some cases it can cause delays or incorrect folder views when navigating your site.

Solution – Disable Directory Caching

To improve FTP performance, disable directory caching in your FTP client. The exact steps depend on the software you are using:

  • FileZilla: Go to Edit → Settings → Interface → Directory Listing Caching and disable caching.
  • WinSCP: Go to Preferences → Panels and untick Cache remote directory listings.
  • WS_FTP: Look under Session Properties → Advanced and disable caching options.

Once disabled, folder navigation should be faster and more reliable.

ℹ Tip: If FTP browsing remains slow after disabling caching, check your internet connection, firewall settings, or try switching to SFTP for more stable performance.
